コース概要:Covering a variety of topics related to welfare and wellbeing in Northern Europe, you will gain a better understanding of the Nordic welfare model, Scandinavian values and priorities, as well as the countries’ shortcomings. While the starting point is Scandinavia, the course is meant to inspire you to reflect on welfare and wellbeing in your own life, and we will discuss challenges and future aspirations as well. Making use of a variety of visuals and materials, the course will be a mix of lectures and discussion, and active participation is greatly encouraged.

◆第1回 The Unique Concept of ‘Hygge’

概要: We are starting the course about Scandinavian Welfare and Wellbeing by exploring a core element of Scandinavian happiness and well-being: ‘hygge’. Recently, the concept of ‘hygge’ has gained fame and popularity around the world - you might even have come across this word in Japan?! But what does ‘hygge’ actually mean and what is ‘hygge’ to you? Join us for a heartwarming session to kick off the course and NPA’s 5th term in style!

◆第2回  Lifelong Learning - Education in Scandinavia

概要:This session, we take a closer look at education in Northern Europe. We will discuss both compulsory education as well as the unique ‘folk high school’ system - a live-in school for adults. We will discuss how education shapes citizens and plays an essential role in democracy and peace-building.

◆第3回 Environmentalism in Scandinavia - more than just an eco-bag

概要:The Nordic countries are famous for being at the forefront of environmental development, but why does sustainability and environmentalism have such high priority in Scandinavia? We will look at environmentalism in everyday life in Scandinavia, as well as how the Nordic countries continue to influence environmental policies of the European Union in particular. We will also discuss what environmentalism means to us, and what more we can do for the environment and the current climate crisis.

◆第4回 Gender Equality - reality or false advertising?

概要: The Nordic countries generally rank high in the Gender Gap Reports, published annually by the World Economic Forum, but what does ‘gender equality’ mean in Scandinavia and are the genders actually equal? We will look at regional differences, LGBTQ+ rights, and current issues within the gender debate in Scandinavia. Join and share your own thoughts on what gender equality is or should be.

概要:he past five sessions, we have covered a variety of topics related to welfare and wellbeing. During this last session, we will revisit some of these topics and look to the future. We will discuss similarities and differences between welfare and wellbeing in Denmark and Japan, and address current and possible future trends. What kind of welfare and wellbeing would you like to see in the future? And how can we contribute to the realization of this vision? Come join the discussion!
