概要：「平和と民主主義」、これは日本国憲法の下で戦後日本の歩みを導く基本理念であると考えられてきた。しかし、日本の近現代史の実際において､「民主主義」は「戦争」とどのように関わってきているだろうか？　自由民権運動、大正デモクラシーといった、日本近代の「民主主義」の時代を振り返りながら、植民地主義と総力戦体制の形成に進んだ日本の歩みを再検討し､そこで日本の民衆が実際に果たした役割について考えたい。
