概要：オランダおよび日本の植民地支配から解放されたインドネシアは、戦後、複雑な独立国家の建設と政体の確立を経たが、その後スハルト体制が約30年間にわたり続いた。1998年にスハルト政権が崩壊し、インドネシアは本格的な民主化の時代を迎えることになる。1998年以前と以後で、インドネシア社会の政治体制や基本的な社会構造は大きく様変わりした。
1998年以前の民主化運動が主に国家主導の権威主義的体制からの脱却と、表現の自由・市民の権利を求める動きであったのに対し、1998年以降のインドネシアは、民主制度の定着をめぐる課題、多様な民族・宗教・地域の利害対立、そしてグローバル経済への対応といった複雑な挑戦に直面している。
インドネシアの学生運動世代であるJATI先生の実体験と視点を通じて、インドネシアの戦後民主化運動の歴史とその現在地、さらに残された課題を分析し、今後の展望について共に考察する。
